G8--G20 Visual Challenge

A 3' x 4' Mural to challenge the G8 and G20 ministers

Spirit of Accountability 2010

Huntsville and Toronto Canada provides the earth space for the G8 and G20 leaders to make factual decisions on—poverty and health, the treatment of women and children, climate change as well as other critical issues.

It is time to set aside self-serving attitudes and use the wealth of their nations to lead the way to an immediate, responsible and optimistic response to crucial world issues

With the G-20 growing in stature since the 2008 Washington summit, its leaders announced on September 25, 2009, that the group will replace the G8 as the main economic council of wealthy nations.[5]
Heads of states of G-20 members meet biannually at the G-20 Summit. The 2010 G-20 Summits are scheduled to be held in Toronto on June 26-27
G8 is a dead organisation now,it's impact and life over.

I am beginning to understand the truth of your comments as I have had a great deal of difficulty get any factual information on the purpose of the 2010 G8 summit in Huntsville.
Millions will be spent providing a safe environment for the G8 leaders but I can only get a vague statement regarding the mandate. It does appear that the G8 is being replaced by the G20 and I can only hope that my mural will be a significant reminder to the G20 of their responsibilities.
Can anyone help me better understand

Using art to hold G8 countries responsible

Angular bodies hold up bowls for food. Death lurks behind a nuclear rocket. A man clutches a rifle.

This is artist Terry Gill’s version of the G8 Summit and how he plans to hold world leaders accountable when they come calling to Huntsville in June.

“It’s my expectations of them,” said Gill, a long-time Muskoka resident of a three-by-four-foot mural he’s in the process of painting. “It’s to show them what their responsibilities and their mandate really is.”

The 69-year-old artist is self-taught. A former employment counsellor, the idea of painting first came to him when guiding a canoe trip. He dipped watercolour paper into water and painted on it while wet, instantly loving the aesthetics of it.

Today, he still doesn’t pre-plan his paintings, and teaches the same techniques. “You let the paint, paper and water take you wherever you want to go. And then you use your imagination,” he says.

That’s how the G8 painting came about.

A fan of the murals around Huntsville, Gill wanted to try his hand at acrylic painting.

“I started playing around with it,” he recalls of the six months he has spent on the mural, which is still only partially finished.

“When the G8 came up, I started to think about what it means for environment and Muskoka.”

In his studio south of Huntsville the naturalist explains the themes embedded in his work.

The painting, he said, started rather dark, reflective of his concerns for the world.

“I’m very concerned about our environment …. I find it hard to believe the way we destroy things and how it’s coming back to haunt us,” he said. “The G8, they have the power to change these things.”

He explains how he’s trying to show that. Above the depictions of nuclear war and starving people — all themes at previous G8 summits — the top, right hand corner of the mural displays sunlight filtering through pines of Muskoka, flowing down into the mural to portray the hope for enlightenment at the Huntsville summit.

This shows optimism, says Gill. “Maybe the hope of things much better for the group.”What it will look like when it’s finished is anyone’s guess.

“New ideas keep coming to me. It keeps leading me,” he says, adding he hopes to paint the mural in public and welcomes the public’s suggestions as to where he should display it.

“It’s a heartfelt kind of thing and let’s see where it goes,” he said.
